Net Zero Heroes!

Over the next 3 months, we are seeking households of all shapes and sizes to take part in a social experiment which will explore the successes and barriers that people will experience when attempting to adopt a low carbon sustainable lifestyle.

We are seeking:

5x Active Travel households – for one month, you will be provided with bikes from Cycling UK Highland and asked to try and travel by bike or walk as often as possible.

5x Shopping Local households – for one month, you will be asked to try and source all that your household requires in terms of food through shopping locally and independently.

5x Going Zero Waste households – you will be supplied with a composter and kitchen caddy and asked to reduce, re-use and recycle all your waste with a concentrated effort to reducing completely what is entering landfill. The challenge will last one month, but you can of course, continue your efforts afterwards.

With ongoing support from the Thurso Community Development Trust, each household is being asked to record their experience through diary entries, pictures, and videos detailing their journey and the challenges and successes they experience. We are not expecting the challenge to be easy and perfect. Understanding what the barriers are is the most important aspect. For example, with the active travel set of 5 households if they need to use the car as the weather was terrible, the distance was too long etc we want them to record that, not feel that they absolutely cannot use the car during the period. By understanding the barriers, we can aim to overcome them and make a more sustainable future for us all and the planet.

At the end of the project (September) all households will be invited to an award ceremony at the TCDT office.
