HIGHLAND COMMUNITY

WASTE PARTNERSHIP

Thurso CDT is a member of The Highland Community Waste Partnership, together with other seven Highland community groups, coordinated by Keep Scotland Beautiful:

  • Broadford & Strath Community Company

  • Highland Good Food Partnership

  • Lairg & District Learning Centre

  • Lochaber Environmental Group

  • Transition Black Isle

  • Ullapool Community Trust

  • Velocity Café and Bicycle Workshop

Together we are working to reduce waste in our communities and across the Highlands, by changing the way that we all consume, that is, buy, use and dispose of things.

This means using things better, for longer, reducing the impact of waste on our communities and working together to make the most of what we’ve got.

This will help cut costs, grow local, grassroots initiatives and transform the way we live to reduce our environmental impact.

We’re working on three main areas of waste:

o   Reducing food waste and promoting composting of food waste

o   Encouraging share and repair instead of buying new and a ‘throw-away culture’

o   Promoting alternatives to single-use packaging and other disposable items and improving recycling opportunities

  • We’re helping people make changes; transforming how we make, sell, buy and use stuff. This means using things better, for longer, reducing the impact of waste on our communities and working together to make the most of what we’ve got.

  • We are promoting systemic change, led by the community and for the community.

  • We are keen to connect, support and collaborate with anyone and everyone in the Highlands who is interested in reducing waste, conserving money and resources and living more sustainably.

  • From tiny steps to big transformations, we all have a powerful part to play in making change happen, so let’s join forces and see what we can do!

Change is a journey. Whether this is all brand new to you, or you're looking to brush up or deepen your understanding, habits or choices, we’ve got something for everyone:

  • Get inspired - Our programme of community conversations will help you get to grips with the problems and solutions at hand.

  • Learn new skills - Our programme of reuse, repair, food waste reduction and composting workshops will help you learn handy new skills and tips for reducing waste and saving more.

  • Take action - We are working to set up and connect you to helpful services, from repair directories and swap shops to packaging-free retail.

  • Look to the future - We are also helping to drive change, by trying out new ways of selling, buying, using and re-cycling things, designed to cut waste out of the equation and ensure that materials are used again and again and again.
