Sir John’s Square Community Takeover

Sir John’s Square is important to Thurso folk. Returning home and you come round that bend to come across the Bridge and see it there in all its usual colourful glory over the Summer? Feels like home.

This year, due to Covid-19 unfortunately the usual bedding plant order placed by Highland Council has been cancelled by the supplier. We all know what a fabulous job Kelvin and the other Gardeners do every year but unfortunately once the existing Tulips die it there will be no bursts of colour.

BUT, and its a big BUT, we have a plan!

Thanks to Highland Council they have agreed for us to do a takeover for this summer. Our fantastic Thurso Grows team will be doing the planting of edibles, beautiful vegetables which can be picked by anyone once it is time for them to harvest. While we are asking you all to get involved with painted stones for a burst of colour and a real community effort! There are lots of ways you can get involved.

  1. Our Thurso Grows Team are looking for a Gardening Squad. We’re looking for around 6-8 volunteers who will form a team and be briefed on the weeding, prepping and planting that will be needed. You would be briefed by Sharon and work under social distancing to a planting plan. If you would like to help with this please get in touch via email to thursogrows@thursocdt.co.uk

  2. Paint some stones! This is where lots of you can get involved!

What we would love to see are lots of painted stones in different colours of the Rainbow to make up a design. We aren’t looking for Rainbows painted on a stone. We want pink, purple, green, blue, yellow, orange, red stones with whatever design you would like to have on them but sticking to shades of one of the Rainbow colours on each stone.

    We have acrylic paint pens.

We can also provide stones or you can go and find your own.

If you would like a Stone Painting Kit, please head over to our Wellbeing page and request one for delivery or collection.

Once you have painted your stone, under social distancing please drop it down to Sir John’s Square where we will have a box within the gardens you can drop your stone off to.

You can also send us a picture of your name and stone to our Facebook page where we can display them all in an album!

You can do more than one stone if you would like.

  3. Once we have your Painted Stones we’ll spray them with varnish to protect them from the Thurso Weather and they will be ready to lay out!

We’ll have a design on board at Sir John’s Square with a design on how to lay out the stones and anyone from the community can help lay them out. Think painting by numbers, instead this is garden design by numbers! Under social distancing you can pop down to Sir John’s Square and help lay out according to the design any stones that are there.

Voila! We will have beautiful colourful gardens which the community have all contributed to bringing together!
