A clear theme which ran throughout our Community Consultation was the need for Thurso to capitalise on opportunities in tourism from the NC500 and being a stopping point towards Orkney.
We have been successful in receiving funding from Highland LEADER and the Caithness & North Sutherland Fund to deliver the following project.
A Destination Marketing website and associated social media for Thurso.
Employment of a Tourism Development Officer
Localisation classes for those interacting with tourists - everyone can give tourist information!
Research, consult and prepare a Tourism Development Plan for Thurso.
The project is delivered by our Tourism Development Officer, Scott Mclean.
Scott has been working really hard on the project since joining us in November 2018. You can see the progress for yourself on the Discover Thurso website and social media channels. We’ve launched a facebook and Instagram account so please do give them a like and a follow and of course, share them with anyone you know visiting the area. Join in with your own images of the town using #DiscoverThurso

The localisation workshops have been very well received and we’ve loved meeting new people and learning new snippets of our town which we locals and tourism professionals can share with our visitors. Once visitors have found us online and made the journey to Thurso, we’ve created a printed information pack for them to pick up and use during their trip as a handy guide. It’s full to the brim of all kinds of hints, tips and stories about our town. Check it out here.
While the localisation workshops have now ended we have composed the information into this handy Localisation Pack which you can use as a guide to the area and pass onto your staff to increase their knowledge of places to visit, local information, food and drink and all things Thurso and Caithness. Scott is now working on further consultation and will be creating a development plan for Thurso, watch this space for updates or please do drop Scott an e-mail, you can reach him at: firstname.lastname@example.org or complete the contact form below.
