Updates from the Gardens

Its been a fantastic beginnings for the community gardens… Since May its been go go go up at Ormlie, with lots of planting, making, designing and reviewing going on.

Our two regular garden sessions (Saturdays 11am - 1pm and Tuesdays 2.30pm- 4.30pm) have often got 10+ people attending and a lovely community is growing up around these sessions with a common passion for gardening.

Our design is in place, and we begin to get a feel for how the space will develop. The Polycrub has arrived (a Shetland style polytunnel) and will be going up in the next few weeks. Our compost toilet build has begun (we will have the best off grid loo in Thurso by the end of August) and we have over 20 raised beds built and all planted with veg! We have also held various cooking and composting workshops and have been busy designing events for the autumn season up at the gardens.

In the next few months we will be launching a series of cooking workshops - that are free to attend and will be focusing on how we can prevent food going to waste, on eating locally and seasonally and on lowering our food miles. If you are interested in joining in on these please get in touch .

Its been a good beginnings and with reflection its also good to think about the motivation of the gardens.

Here at Thurso Grows we believe that Climate Change is real, that it is happening and that through growing our own food and reducing our food waste Thurso can be a positive part of the solutions that we all need to find in the coming years.

We will continue our composting workshops (these are proving popular) and introduce more events and workshops focused on food and cultivation. Growing food can be a huge saving to our carbon emissions as well as proving beneficial for mental and physical health.

We have a busy schedule of workshops and events coming up……

Every Tuesday (2.30pm - 4.30pm) and every Saturday (11am - 1pm) you will find us up at the gardens hosting a garden session… come along, help with a variety of jobs that are on the go, meet new folks and learn about gardening.
